So we recently ran our first contest on ~newfoundland
These are the final submissions, images and text used with permission
of the copyright holders (as per the instructions for the contest.
Heres the blurb about the idea behind the contest:

The basic idea of the contest is
to come up with a deviation that best brings across "Newfoundland",
whether its the place, the people, or the idea. The interpretation of
that is open to the deviant, but the description of your deviation
should contain some discussion of your idea and what it means.

The voting is open now until end of day on September 13th, and
all members of the ~newfoundland
group are encouraged to vote.

How
To Vote:

Send a Note

link to the deviation to make it totally clear where your vote is.

One vote per member of the group please, and everyone should try and
get a vote in, these are all great entries.

Prizes:

There will be 2 prizes awarded, both 3 month subscriptions, or prints

      Description for contest

Okay, so what do we have going on here? A mountain, duh.
But here's
how i see it. There are three things there that Newfoundland can be
known for. Number one, the water. The water has supported a great deal
in Newfoundland from the vast ocean to rivers. Without the oceans, the
fishery never would have existed. without the rivers, our hydro or the
logging would never have existed either. Number two, the rock/mountain.
Newfoundland is a rock, we get our nickname from the vast amount of
rock that we are covered by but the mountain also stands for the rough
turrain Newfoundland is comprised of. Get me? Good. Now, number three,
the trees on the left. We have a forestry, and if we never had trees,
we'd only be a rock.
the last reason sucks, I know. I'll live with it.

summer days when you and a bunch of your friends(or just someone
special) go to the nearest park, er just out on the front lawn and just
lay down in the grass and let the sun warm your whole body. If i ever
move away, thats what i want to take with me, a sence of friendship and

laughing and call me, saying get the camera, and so i did, then saw

get out.
about died laughing, it was just so funny to see this small breed of

2005 in Bannerman Park.
Fergus was honored with the Amabassor of
Newfoundland Music award that night and his acceptance speach really touched me.
He mentioned that he immigrated from Ireland in the early 70's and fell in love
with the Island of Newfoundland. Most of people moving to Newfoundland are given
the title CFA, Come From Away, and Fergus mention that his attachment for the
Island made him give himself a new title, NBC, Newfoundlander by choice.

I moved in Newfoundland on June 12, 2003 from Montreal, PQ, needing a
change of scenery. I moved almost blindly. The only things I knew about
Newfoundland was what I have read. I didn't know a soul here and never sat foot
on the Island before. I was immediatly charmed and fell in love with all the
aspect of Newfoundland, the food, the night life, the music, the people and yes,
the weather also. I found people to be welcoming, warm, helpful, caring and laid
back. I found home.
I am Ariel and I am a NBC, a Newfoundland By
Choice.

I did take a few pictures that night, a lot of Fergus and I
wanted to do something that represents the way I see him now. By coloring the
pictures and rearraging them to show the Republic of Newfoundland flag I felt it
represent perfectly the way I percieve him now and the way I feel about this
beautiful Island.

Here is my submission for the 1st ~newfoundland
contest. Basically I went through my numerous photos in Newfoundland,
and found that this one felt not only interesting, but meaningful.
Naturally, it immediately had the connection to the sea that we as
Newfoundlanders have always had, being an island, and also due to our
rich fishing industry's history. I also felt that this shell
represented Newfoundland fairly well, not only because it is a very
common site on our shores, but because it was the home of one that had
to drag itself through the sea as our ancestors did, no doubt through
some hardship, to take residence on this welcoming land. I would expect
that the inhabitant of this shell may have had offspring who would
leave and come back to one of Newfoundland's coasts, which also is a
similar and common pattern to our own people.

This photo was taken in Shallow Bay on the northern coast of
Newfoundland on my way to St. Anthony.
No alteration was done to this photo except some minor level
adjustment, and of course, the border.
